We have been working with an organisation with operations in PNG recently. As I research and learn more about the country I am realising what a complex and challenging environment it must be to work in.
The organisation requires expats to venture to the country as part of it’s operations and it really made me consider the extent to which a posting there would be a hardship one. The organisation also faces multilayered challenges as it must engage with intra-cultural, inter-cultural and organisational culture issues.
Throw in the complexities of Fly In Fly Out (FIFO), staff retention and the demands that COVID has brought and it makes working at this location a hardship posting on many levels. The need to recruit, reward and retain expats in this position is certainly a challenge.
However, as they are an essential component of the success of the business it is imperative to find ways that support and foster their growth and engagement.
