DEI – TOP DOWN OR BOTTOM UP?

 

This year has been one of the busiest ever for me as a consultant in the last 30 years. The awareness of and need for DEI work seems to be growing exponentially and is being driven by global changes at many levels.

Something I have noticed is that the nature of the work is changing. The approach to DEI is evolving to be more strategic and far sighted. It is moving beyond awareness raising to embedding it within systems. As part of this, numerous organisations are reviewing how they undertake this work and reconsidering whether it should only be a top-down approach, or could it work in reverse and be bottom up?

Both approaches are valid, but it does depend on where the organisation is in terms of their DEI journey, the leadership commitment and the engagement levels of the employees.
