Turning 50 and Personal Renewal

As I sit down to write this article I am filled with a sense of fear, anxiety, excitement and trepidation all rolled into one. At the end of this month I will be turning 50!  Im looking forward to the next decade of life and I have made a few choices going forward.

One of these choices is that Im taking a sabbatical for the next 12 months. I have been an independent consultant now for 17 years and feel it is time to take a break from the business to focus on some other parts of my life. As many of you are aware the past 10 years have been a time of extensive overseas travel for me, which has required me to be away from my family for extended periods of time.  As much as I have enjoyed the travel, and will miss aspects of it over the next 12 months, I want to spend more time with my young family and friends and just be around.

I also want to complete my dissertation for my doctorate, which requires a considerable amount of time and focus.  I plan on using the sabbatical to slow down and actually enjoy my research and writing (if there is such a thing!).

As I begin my sabbatical at the end of July, the Cultural Synergist will be suspended until July 2010; however if there are any special announcements to be made I will contact you.   For existing clients and assignments that are already committed to, my associates at Cultural Synergies will ensure that everything will proceed as planned. I will continue to work on specific projects at my discretion on an ad hoc basis.

I want to thank all of you for your support and your interest in my work and look forward to reconnecting with you in July 2010.  In the meantime I am still contactable via my usual address and phone numbers.

Thanks again and may your god bless you. See you in 2010!

 Recommended Book

Half Time: Moving from Success to Significance, by Bob Burford, Zondervan (2008).

I have chosen Half Time as this months book review. It is a book that has offered me some great insights as I embark on the second half of my life.  It was first published in 1994 and this is the latest reprint with a foreword from Jim Collins.  The focus is all about transitioning into the second half of your life which Buford believes can be more creative, impactful, meaningful and more adventurous than the first half.

He discusses the first half of life where there is little time to think about where we are actually going as we are so busy proving ourselves and accomplishing big things.  Half time which can occur between your late 30s and late 50s is about taking stock and making a plan for where, how and with whom you want to spend the second half of your life. It is a time for revitalization.

Burford points out that halftime doesnt require you to have a crisis.  It can merely be a time in our lives that is a catalyst for purpose and growth that can propel us onto a new course.
