CALLING IT OUT / CALLING IT IN

We have been working with a client recently on the topic of bias. As part of the action steps to address bias, we are using the concept of calling it out and calling it in. This is a useful way to describe two very different techniques when broaching difficult subjects.

Calling it out, involves using language to disrupt the conversation and indicate that the recipient may not see things the same way or may be uncomfortable with the views being expressed.

Calling it in, is a technique used to further invoke a deeper discussion into the nature of the thinking behind the viewpoint or statements that are made. Calling it in, allows for seeking an understanding and being open to different perspectives.

Both have their place when engaging with bias and of course are highly contingent on a degree of psychological safety being in place.

Are you calling out and calling in?
