How often are we in a position to feel what it may be like to be the outsider or in a minority? Too often we are magnetised to situations in which we are comfortable and at ease, thereby protecting ourselves. Developing more empathy and understanding is a key part of understanding what it may be like to be an outsider. It requires an openness to challenges and different viewpoints. The flipside of this is that sometimes, those that may have been outsiders may be less understanding and accommodating as they believe that what they have had to endure should be endured by others in the same way.

What is your experience of being an outsider and how does that inform your approach?
